Sammie Maxwell Impresses With Sixth-Place Finish in UCI MTB World Series Return
Sammie Maxwell made a remarkable return to the WHOOP UCI MTB World Series, securing a sixth-place finish in the cross-country Olympic (XCO) race at Les Gets, France, after stepping away from elite competition to focus on her health.
Overcoming Adversity on the Les Gets Course
The return to top-tier racing presented immediate logistical and physical hurdles for the young rider from New Zealand. A flat tyre thwarted Maxwell’s hopes in the short-track (XCC) race earlier in the week, resulting in a DNF and leaving her buried at 29th on the starting grid for the main cross-country event. Rain earlier in the weekend compounded the course difficulty, turning sections of the Haute Savoie venue into a technical challenge.
Despite the unfavorable grid position, Maxwell systematically dismantled the field. She climbed to 15th place by the second lap, surged into the top ten while riding alongside Puck Pieterse (Alpecin-Premier Tech), and ultimately crossed the finish line in sixth. The event was won by Sina Frei (Specialized Factory Racing) with a time of 1:22:48, while Jenny Rissveds took second and Maxwell’s Decathlon Ford teammate Savilia Blunk claimed third.
From Health Recovery to Peak Power Metrics
Maxwell’s hiatus followed a highly successful debut season in the elite ranks where she secured the overall series title. During her time away, she grappled with an eating disorder. Speaking to the WHOOP MTB Series before the event, Maxwell noted that she used the months away to rebuild her physical and mental foundation. “I feel like I’ve unlocked a secret key of just fueling my body and focusing a lot on strength and power and sustainability,” Maxwell said.

Prior to the weekend, she reported that her monitored training power numbers had increased by 10% compared to last year. That raw athletic output translated directly to the track; during the penultimate lap of the XCO race, Maxwell clocked the fastest lap time of the entire elite female field.

Looking Ahead to Val di Sole
The mountain bike calendar now shifts decisively toward the international stage. Following the conclusion of the Les Gets round, the New Zealand team prepares to travel to Val di Sole, Italy, for the UCI MTB World Championships running from August 26-30. With a shortened competitive block under her belt and confirmed form that includes a recent win at the Swiss MTB World Cup in Lostorf, Maxwell enters the rainbow jersey battle with renewed momentum. As the sport looks toward the final two World Series rounds in Utah and Lake Placid in September and October, the series champion has proven her trajectory remains firmly pointed toward the front of the pack.
