LUBBOCK, Texas – Sam Houston state men’s basketball faces a notable challenge Friday night, traveling to United Supermarkets Arena to take on No. 10 Texas Tech in a 7 p.m. matchup streamed on ESPN+.
The bearkats (1-0) are coming off a decisive 95-59 season-opening victory against LeTourneau on Monday, showcasing depth and size. Freshman Jacobe Coleman led all scorers with 17 points, while Jacob Walker added 13. Senior Damon Nicholas Jr. contributed 12 points in his return from a season-ending injury, and transfers Po’Boigh King and Isaiah Manning each scored 11. Kashie Natt nearly recorded a double-double with seven points and 11 rebounds.
This contest marks Sam Houston’s first road game of the season and presents a steep test against a ranked Power 4 opponent.Historically, the Bearkats have struggled in road openers, posting a 2-8 record in their last 10 attempts as the 2015-16 season, with wins at Oklahoma (2022) and Pacific (2023). Sam Houston holds a 2-5 record against Power 4 schools over the past three seasons, including a previous loss to Texas Tech (96-60) two seasons ago.
