Sam Champion: GMA Weatherman Reveals Heart Procedure & Recovery

Good Morning America weatherman Sam Champion is recovering after undergoing a heart procedure at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital in New York City, he revealed in an Instagram post on Friday.

Champion, 64, shared a photo of himself smiling from his hospital bed, thanking doctors Stam Lerakis and Sharma, as well as the nursing staff. He explained that the procedure followed a nuclear stress test conducted the previous Thursday, which revealed the need for intervention. “Many of you know I had a nuclear stress test last Thursday. And we found some things that needed to be taken care of,” he wrote. “So today I went into the cardiac catheterization laboratory….. And we took care of it. Thanks to these procedures, I am well and expected to make a full recovery.”

The weatherman did not elaborate on the specifics of the procedure, but indicated he was optimistic about a full recovery. He later posted a brief update to his Instagram story stating, “A little work then back to normal.”

Champion’s post quickly drew an outpouring of support from colleagues and friends. Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts commented, “You know [I’m] here if you need anything at all! Speedy recovery on the way!” Rebecca Jarvis, also a correspondent for GMA, wrote, “So glad you are taking care of YOU! Feel good, Sam. Big hugs❤️‍🩹.” Today show weatherman Al Roker added, “Sam The Man. Glad you are on the mend, my friend.”

Champion was absent from the March 23 broadcast of Good Morning America while undergoing the procedure and initial recovery.

This health scare comes two years after Champion publicly discussed his diagnosis and treatment for basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, in 2024. At the time, he emphasized the importance of sun safety and regular skin checks, sharing his experience on GMA and encouraging viewers to prioritize preventative care.
