Salvation Army Windsor Calls for Food Donations on World Homeless Day
“People are in positions where they have to make very difficult choices, like impossible choices. Do I go buy groceries and put food on my table, or do I pay my rent? Which one is it? And that’s an impossible choice,” said Jason Linton, Executive Director of The Salvation Army Windsor Centre of Hope.
The Salvation Army Windsor Centre of Hope is turning to the community to restock its food bank as demand continues to grow. The annual food drive will be held Friday, October 9, in recognition of World Homeless Day from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at eight grocery stores across Windsor-Essex.
Rising Cost of Living Increases Food Bank Visits
Linton stated that the food bank has recorded an average of 1,300 individual visits each month so far this year, reflecting ongoing community need driven by the rising cost of living. The food collected during the drive will help sustain the food bank throughout the winter months. People are encouraged to donate non-perishable items such as canned goods, pasta, rice, instant noodles, cereal, peanut butter, and oatmeal.

Eight Store Locations Accept Food Bank Donations
To make donating as easy as possible, shoppers will be provided with a list of needed items upon entering the stores, with a desk available to drop off donations as they leave. Donations can be dropped off at eight locations:
- Superstore on Dougall and Walker Road
- Zehrs locations on Manning, Malden, and Parkway
- Metro stores on Central and Howard
- Tony and Kathy’s No Frills on Tecumseh Road
The organization reported that the initiative is being supported by the LaSalle Police, Windsor Police, Ontario Provincial Police, and the Rotary Club of Walkerville.
