Salem ⁢Upgrades Downtown with New Trash Receptacles as Part of ongoing Streetscape Project

Salem, oregon – Downtown Salem is undergoing a visible upgrade with the installation of 27 new trash⁤ receptacles, replacing bins that have been in use for over two decades. The project, which began on january 12th ‍and is⁣ expected to continue through February, aims to ⁤enhance cleanliness and address concerns raised by local businesses and visitors. The total ⁣cost of the project ⁢is $37,364.

The new receptacles, costing $1,022 each for a total of $27,594, and an additional⁤ $9,770 ⁢for installation, offer several ‍improvements over the previous models. They feature a large opening with a chute for disposal and ⁤a flat, smooth surface designed for easier ⁣cleaning. A key feature ⁤is the elimination of outer rims where ‍trash could accumulate, preventing overflow and litter.

“This project comes at a crucial time as we strive to enhance the cleanliness of‌ downtown, directly addressing⁣ the concerns raised by our businesses and visitors,” stated Dana DeKlyen, Urban ‍Development Assistant Director for the City of ‍salem.

The number ⁢of trash receptacles will remain consistent, but their⁤ placement will be adjusted to improve accessibility throughout the downtown core. City officials are ⁢also planning to utilize‌ the new design for future art wraps, similar to the ‌artwork already featured on downtown‌ utility boxes ⁢ as reported by the Statesman Journal.

This upgrade is funded through Urban‍ Renewal funding dedicated to Riverfront Downtown capital projects and is a⁢ component of the larger, multi-year Downtown Salem Streetscape project.⁣ The Streetscape project focuses on improving sidewalks, infrastructure, and street furnishings throughout the downtown area.
