Saudi Arabia Unifies Hajj Information Systems for Media

Kingdom aims for accurate pilgrim guidance through enhanced media cooperation

The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is actively working to synchronize its information dissemination channels for Hajj and Umrah services, emphasizing the critical role of the media in providing clear guidance to prospective pilgrims.

Fostering Accurate Pilgrim Guidance

During a recent workshop in Jakarta, Hassan Al-Manakhra, Deputy for Foreign Relations at the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, underscored the government’s commitment to building robust, long-term relationships with Indonesian journalists. The initiative’s core objective is to establish and align information systems related to Hajj and Umrah.

“Our aim in holding this workshop is to create and align the information system on Hajj and Umrah,”

Al-Manakhra stressed that providing precise information is paramount for pilgrims to undertake their spiritual journeys with peace of mind. “If the information provided about Hajj is accurate, it will make pilgrims feel comfortable and at ease. Otherwise, if the information provided is invalid, Hajj and Umrah pilgrims will feel uncomfortable and unsafe,” he explained.

Media Collaboration to Enhance Information Access

The workshop provided a platform for journalists to voice their challenges in accessing Hajj and Umrah information. One participant highlighted ongoing difficulties and proposed the establishment of a dedicated media center to facilitate smoother information acquisition and allow for direct questioning on pertinent issues.

To address these concerns, Moath, the media manager for the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, outlined official channels for obtaining information. These include the ministry’s official website, its social media accounts, the Saudi Ministry of Media, and the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Navigating Hajj Information Guidelines

Journalists were also briefed on guidelines from the Saudi Media Regulatory Authority regarding information access. These guidelines strongly encourage the use of official sources, such as government agency spokespersons, for all published information and statistics.

Crucially, regulations concerning media activities during the Hajj season were reiterated. Aerial photography using drones requires prior authorization from the relevant authorities. Similarly, the installation of closed-circuit television networks within hotels in Mecca and Medina necessitates obtaining specific licenses from the Saudi General Authority for Media Regulation.

The need for accurate information dissemination is increasingly vital, especially as the number of pilgrims participating in the Hajj continues to grow. In 2023, over 1.8 million pilgrims performed Hajj, highlighting the scale of operations and the importance of clear communication for a seamless experience (Arab News, 2023).
