Rybakina credits Reinstated Coach Vukov as Key to US Open Success, Improved health
NEW YORK – Elena Rybakina is enjoying a resurgence in form at the US Open, reaching the fourth round for the first time in her career after a dominant win over Emma Raducanu on friday, and credits the return of coach Stefano Vukov as a significant factor. Rybakina’s success comes after a period of health challenges and a dispute with the WTA regarding Vukov’s accreditation. The controversy stemmed from a suspension issued by the WTA to Vukov, which was successfully challenged following a hearing before an autonomous tribunal. Rybakina previously stated she “never made any complaints” about Vukov and expressed disagreement with the WTA’s handling of their relationship, saying in January, “I don’t agree with a lot of things the WTA do in the sense of my relationship with Stefano.” The WTA maintains its commitment to a ”safe and respectful environment for all athletes” and confirmed Vukov is now eligible to receive credentials at WTA events, but declined further comment on the specifics of the case.
Rybakina’s recent performance marks a turning point after a arduous stretch that included a battle with insomnia, which led to a breakdown in her immune system and prompted an extended break from the tour at the end of last season. She withdrew from her second-round match at the 2024 US open due to illness and didn’t compete again until November.
“Now it’s much better and I have no issues, so I’m pretty happy,” Rybakina said. She emphasized the importance of team support, adding, “Things in the box definitely helps a lot, and I think it’s critically important when the whole team can support you.”
Rybakina also expressed satisfaction with her physical conditioning, stating, “I think we are managing and getting closer to where I want to be, physically also doing, I think, a pretty good job. Of course, it’s not much time between tournaments, but overall I’m happy with how the work is going right now.” Her return to form, coupled with Vukov’s reinstatement, signals a positive trajectory for the Kazakhstani player as she continues her US Open campaign.
