Rybakina and Gauff headline Group 1 in WTA Finals draw
Top-ranked Elena Rybakina and world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka headline the singles groups for the WTA Finals, which begin Sunday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, sports.inquirer.net reported.
Rybakina and Gauff Headline Group 1 Teams
The draw on Tuesday divided the eight qualifying singles and doubles teams into round-robin pools for the season-ending tournament, running through Nov. 15, 2026. Each player faces the other three competitors in her group over the first six days, with the top two advancing to the semifinals.
In Group 1, defending WTA Finals champion Rybakina is joined by fourth-seeded Coco Gauff, fifth-seeded Jessica Pegula, and No. 8 seed Linda Noskova. Group 2 features Sabalenka alongside No. 3 seed Mirra Andreeva, No. 6 Elina Svitolina, and No. 7 Karolina Muchova, according to the official tournament draw.

WTA Finals tournament director Garbiñe Muguruza noted that Sabalenka enters as a primary contender. “She’s the favorite, on paper,” Muguruza said during the TikTok-streamed ceremony, pointing to two Grand Slam titles in the same year and the No. 1 ranking. The event moved to the Southern California desert from Saudi Arabia due to safety and regional security concerns around the Iran war, as reported by sports.inquirer.net.
Opening Weekend Match Schedule
Play opens Sunday at noon with Rybakina facing Noskova, followed by Gauff meeting Pegula. The two Americans share a 6-6 all-time head-to-head record, with Gauff taking their most recent match in Cincinnati in August. In doubles action on Sunday, Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend face Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini, while Cristina Bucsa and Nicole Melichar-Martinez play Ellen Perez and Demi Schuurs.

Reactions From the Top Seeds
Sabalenka aims to reclaim momentum after losing her top ranking to Rybakina at the US Open, having previously secured the Sunshine Double with titles in both Indian Wells and Miami earlier in the year.
