Russian Double-Tap Strike on Ukraine Mall Kills 16
Sixteen people were killed and 130 others were wounded when a Russian double-tap drone strike hit a busy shopping centre in the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih on Friday, according to local officials. The attack on President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown unfolded in two distinct waves, with the second projectile targeting emergency responders as they arrived at the burning structure.
The Search Through Rubble
Rescue teams from seven different Ukrainian regions deployed to the site to search through the wreckage of the commercial complex. Oleksandr Hanzha, the regional military head, confirmed that the death toll rose to 16 after search crews pulled another body from the rubble overnight. Local officials stated that nine individuals remained missing following the bombardment, including two children.
Children Among the Wounded
Oleksandr Vilkul, head of the city’s defence council, reported that twenty-three children were among the wounded. As of Saturday morning, 14 of those children remained hospitalized alongside dozens of other survivors. Vilkul noted that 23 people overall were listed in serious or extremely serious conditions, including two boys aged 10 and 16 and an 11-year-old girl. All of those critical patients underwent surgery as medical staff provided emergency assistance.
Targeting Emergency Responders
President Zelensky condemned the assault as a cynical and despicable operation designed to hit rescue workers during the second wave of impact. Footage verified by the BBC showed the secondary strike hitting the commercial property while flames from the initial blast were already consuming the structure. Vilkul stated that the attacking drones operated at extremely low altitudes.
Broader Overnight Bombardments
The incident in Kryvyi Rih coincided with broader overnight aerial attacks across Ukraine. Officials reported that at least two additional people died in separate bombardments. Meanwhile, the Russian defence ministry stated that its forces targeted transport infrastructure and warehouses located in the Kyiv region. Russia’s military has not issued a public comment regarding the specific strike on the shopping centre.

Ongoing Recovery Operations
Emergency operations at the Kryvyi Rih site continued as regional authorities coordinated medical care for the injured and maintained recovery efforts for the missing.
