Russian Athletics Federation Files Fresh CAS Challenge Against World Athletics Sanctions
Russian Athletics has lodged a new claim with the Court of Arbitration for Sport challenging sanctions imposed by World Athletics, seeking to restore international competition access for Russian athletes.
The Legal Framework and CAS Arbitration Strategy
According to Channel NewsAsia, the latest appeal marks the second major legal challenge mounted by the federation, following a separate July 9 appeal targeting a World Athletics Council decision to extend athlete suspensions. World Athletics has consistently maintained exclusions for Russian and Belarusian competitors, citing ongoing conflict and broader governance integrity concerns. The Court of Arbitration for Sport, based in Lausanne, Switzerland, serves as sport’s highest independent arbitration body. Russian Athletics stated via Channel NewsAsia that it has retained specialized international sports lawyers with specific expertise in CAS proceedings to manage the complex arbitration path.
The sanctions extend far beyond elite competition bans, cutting the national federation out of core administrative processes. As reported by Channel NewsAsia, the measures leave Russian Athletics unable to participate in World Athletics decision-making functions, including council meetings and official voting blocs. Furthermore, domestic coaches and specialists are barred from attending international coaching conferences, seminars, and professional development programs.
“The sanctions against Russian Athletics are unprecedented. No other sports federation faces such severe restrictions,” Boris Yaryshevskiy, chief executive director of Russian Athletics, said in a statement reported by Channel NewsAsia. Yaryshevskiy added that the measures hinder normal operations and hold back athletic development, particularly among young competitors.
Contrasting Global Governing Body Approaches
The stance taken by World Athletics represents one of the most uncompromising regulatory models in global sport. While select international federations permit limited, conditional participation for athletes competing under a neutral banner, athletics maintains an absolute ban on competitors from Russia and Belarus. The July 3 reaffirmation of these exclusions by the World Athletics Council solidified this hardline posture, driving the federation toward renewed arbitration.
