Russia-Ukraine War: 156 Casualties & 1 Sq Km Claimed – Stop the War

February 25, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

On the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, reports indicate continued intense fighting, particularly around the city of Bakhmut. According to a report cited by columnist Cho Jin-seo, as of January, Ukrainian forces numbered up to 140,000, whereas Russian forces reached a maximum of 325,000.

Cho Jin-seo’s reporting highlights the human cost of the conflict, noting that 156 individuals were lost for every square kilometer of territory gained by Russian forces. This statistic underscores the attritional nature of the war, with significant casualties on both sides. The report too points to a shift in consumer choices within South Korea, with a central Asian restaurant in Seoul replacing Russian beer with Ukrainian beer, potentially reflecting international support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

The aging of the Ukrainian military is becoming a significant concern. A separate report from Cho Jin-seo details findings from Russian independent media and the BBC Russian Service, which reveal an average age of 43 for Ukrainian soldiers. This is attributed to the conscription of men aged 25 to 60, a contrast to the typical conscription age of around 20 in countries like South Korea. Ukraine’s policy of not conscripting those under 25 is reportedly aimed at preserving the future workforce.

Technological adaptations are also shaping the battlefield. Russian forces are utilizing wired drones with fiber optic cables up to 10 kilometers long, prioritizing image clarity and survivability over the convenience of wireless operation. This has prompted a response from Ukraine, which is developing countermeasures to address the effectiveness of these drones.

News related to Russia continues to be a focus of international media, as reported by the Chosun Ilbo, though specific details of current coverage were not provided.
