Russia threatens nuclear response over NATO actions in Kaliningrad
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused Poland and other European nations of making fanatical statements regarding the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. This follows statements from Russian embassies in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Belgium threatening a nuclear response to any NATO actions targeting the territory, after British media and a Sky One miniserial featured scenarios involving regional conflict.
Kremlin Responds to British Media and Regional Defense Debates
The diplomatic escalation began when Russian embassies across Europe published warnings citing a press article from The I Paper and the Sky One miniserial titled “The Wargame.” The television production depicts a fictionalized crisis management scenario involving a confrontation with Moscow, including a simulated NATO strike on the Kaliningrad Oblast. Moscow claimed the broadcast was designed to build public support for a blockade or military strike against the Russian territory.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov defended the retaliatory diplomatic warnings. “We have repeatedly heard fanatical voices from Poland and other European countries raising the issue of Kaliningrad. Therefore, it is right that our diplomats are trying to remind hotheads in Europe of our documents regulating this issue,” Peskov stated, as quoted by the Russian state agency TASS.
Past Statements by Polish Commanders Sparked Moscow Outrage
While the Kremlin did not specify exact statements from Polish officials regarding the current media broadcasts, tensions over Kaliningrad have simmered. In December 2025, comments from former Eurocorps commander General Jarosław Gromadziński in an interview with the Polish outlet Fakt drew sharp condemnation from Russian lawmakers.
“If Russia were to launch an attack, we have the right to enter there and eliminate the threat. We have been accustomed for many years in the military that Kaliningrad is a bunker that we must protect,” General Gromadziński stated at the time. “Today we must say clearly: if you attack us, we can march in and you must take that into account.”
Those remarks triggered an aggressive reaction from the Russian State Duma. Andrei Kolesnik, a member of the parliamentary defense committee, threatened Poland with total destruction in response to the former general’s assessment.
Diplomatic Standoffs and Regional Security Implications
The latest warnings highlight the heightened sensitivity surrounding the Baltic exclave. Russian diplomatic missions reiterated that any military actions by the United Kingdom or NATO directed against Russian territory would be met with a response utilizing all available means, explicitly including nuclear weapons.
