Russia Is Already Waging an Undeclared War Against Europe
An explosive-laden drone discovered at Germany’s Leipzig-Halle Airport has triggered heightened security concerns across Europe, exposing what security analysts identify as an active, subthreshold war waged by Russia against Western nations.
Leipzig-Halle Discovery Flags Hybrid Threat
German authorities confirm the drone incident at the major NATO logistics hub was far from an amateur operation. Instead, officials state it bears the distinct hallmarks of Russian state involvement, highlighting a broader pattern of hybrid aggression that has steadily intensified across the continent.
Three Hundred Attacks Logged by Tracker
Since 2022, the Russian Federation has launched approximately 300 subthreshold attacks against Euro-Atlantic countries. That figure comes directly from data compiled by the Sahaidachnyi Security Center.
Lesia Ogryzko, director of the center, detailed the scope of Moscow’s operations during an April 2 briefing at the Ukrainian Crisis Media Center. She stressed that Russian tactics now extend far beyond traditional cyber espionage.
Research housed in the “Everywhere War” online tracker shows the highest volume of these provocations targeting Poland, Estonia, Germany, the United States, Lithuania, Finland, Denmark, and Latvia. The operations range from GPS signal jamming and the recruitment of local saboteurs to physical damage of underwater energy cables and pipelines. Continuous drone flights, designed to probe air defenses and scout strategic military and civilian facilities, compound the threat.
“The Kremlin has moved from scattered manipulations in the cyber and information space aimed at solving tactical tasks to the deliberate preparation of a future operational theater for potential full-scale aggression,” Ogryzko said.
Testing NATO Resolve and Article 5
Olena Davlikanova, a senior fellow at the Sahaidachnyi Security Center, explained in an interview with TVP World that these actions represent a calculated campaign to test NATO’s Article 5 and wear down Western political will. Davlikanova noted that Germany alone recorded 166 drone incidents in 2026.
Security analysts emphasize that Russian military doctrine treats hybrid warfare as a preliminary shaping phase for total war, rather than an alternative to conventional conflict. According to center studies, Moscow’s primary political objective is the strategic defeat of NATO as a collective security framework, eclipsing purely territorial acquisition in Ukraine.
Scenarios for Regional Escalation
Researchers have modeled several potential escalation paths. Among them is the “Suwałki Gambit”—an effort to sever the narrow land corridor between Kaliningrad and Belarus to isolate the Baltic states. This could be accompanied by simultaneous multi-domain strikes across land, air, sea, cyber, and space.
As European capitals debate proposed defense barriers such as a continental “drone wall,” security experts argue that deterrence demands networked command systems. They emphasize the need for direct technological integration with Ukrainian forces, who possess frontline experience against advanced Russian electronic warfare and autonomous systems.
