Russia Fires Export-Variant S-400 Missiles at Ukraine
Russia is employing surface-to-air missiles, originally designed for export, to strike ground targets within Ukraine. This revelation comes from an investigation published Friday by Defense Express. Recovered fragments confirm the use of 48N6E2 missiles – an export version of the long-range interceptor utilized in the S-300PMU2 Favorit and S-400 air defense systems.
These missiles weren’t intended for ground attacks. They are designed to intercept aircraft and ballistic missiles.Using them in this manner suggests a potential depletion of Russia’s conventional ground-attack munitions, or a willingness to risk damaging valuable air defense capabilities.
Defense Express notes that the 48N6E2 missile has a range of up to 250 kilometers (155 miles). While effective against aerial targets, its accuracy when used against ground targets is questionable. This raises concerns about potential collateral damage and civilian casualties.
The use of export-version missiles also has implications for russia’s international relationships. These weapons systems were sold to various countries, and their use in Ukraine could raise concerns among those nations about the reliability and intended purpose of Russian arms exports.
Analysts suggest this tactic could be a temporary measure. Russia may be attempting to compensate for losses and maintain pressure on Ukrainian forces while it replenishes its supplies of dedicated ground-attack missiles. However, the long-term consequences of degrading its air defense systems remain a significant concern for Russia.
The Ukrainian Air Force has not yet officially commented on this specific growth, but continues to report Russian missile strikes across the country. the conflict continues to evolve, and the use of unconventional tactics highlights the escalating nature of the war.
