Russell Brand Found Guilty of Rape and Sexual Assault

Russell Brand Found Guilty of Rape and Sexual Assault

November 5, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Russell Brand has been found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault at London’s Southwark Crown Court. Following eight hours and thirty minutes of deliberation, the jury cleared the 51-year-old entertainer of two additional counts of rape and one count of attempted indecent assault. Sentencing is scheduled for Monday, where the judge, Mr Justice Bennathan, indicated Brand will face a significant custodial term.

Jury Finds Brand Guilty on Multiple Assault Counts

The trial, which Deadline reported on daily via a live video feed, lasted less than four weeks. The jury delivered their verdicts on a Thursday, finding Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. According to the court records, the guilty verdicts relate to incidents occurring between 2004 and 2009. The jury acquitted Brand on charges related to two other complainants, including an allegation from 1999 and an attempted indecent assault charge from 2001 that the judge had previously downgraded due to insufficient evidence.

During the proceedings, the prosecution presented a narrative of a man who viewed women as disposable commodities. In his defense, Brand’s barrister, Ian Winter KC, contended that while his client may have led a highly promiscuous life, such behavior is lawful if consensual. Brand himself testified that he was obsessed with sex as a young man but maintained that consent was non-negotiable in his encounters, as noted by CBS News.

The Path to Prosecution

The six women who brought charges against Brand were prompted to come forward following a 2023 Channel 4 documentary and reports in The Times. During the trial, the defense argued that this media coverage had poisoned the well of justice and influenced the accusers to recast their memories. The prosecution countered that the coverage simply provided a space for these women to finally share experiences that had haunted them for years.

The allegations spanned a decade, from 1999 to 2009—a period during which Brand ascended from an unknown actor to international fame. The court heard testimony from all six accusers, who retain a lifelong right to anonymity. Det Supt Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police praised the resilience of the complainants, stating that the convictions send a clear message that no one is above the law, regardless of their public profile or power, as reported by The Guardian.

Immediate Consequences and Sentencing

Following the delivery of the verdicts, Brand was remanded in custody. Judge Bennathan, who commended the jury for their diligence, confirmed that the nature of the convictions necessitates a prison sentence. Brand, who wore a grey suit throughout the trial and was observed appearing to pray in the dock, looked toward his wife, Laura, before being taken into custody.
