Rupert Grint: From Ron Weasley to Horror Movie Star – A Career Shift
Rupert Grint, best known for his role as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter film series, is cautioning fans that his upcoming film, Nightborn, represents a significant departure from the lighthearted character that defined much of his early career. The Finnish horror film, marking Grint’s first feature since 2023’s Knock at the Cabin, explores dark themes of parenthood and marital strain.
In Nightborn, Grint portrays Jon, a father navigating the challenges of raising a newborn with his wife, Saga, played by Seidi Haarla, in a remote forest setting. The couple’s lives are disrupted by unsettling discoveries surrounding their son, leading to tension within their marriage. Grint recently emphasized the stark contrast between this role and his portrayal of Ron Weasley, stating, “It does go against the warmth of Ron,” in a recent interview with Variety.
The actor, who joined Instagram in 2020 and quickly gained a massive following, has spoken about his evolving approach to acting. He acknowledged the financial freedom afforded by the success of the Harry Potter franchise, allowing him to “pick and choose” projects at his own pace. “It was hard work, but those movies have allowed us to pick and choose, which is just such a gift,” Grint told Variety. He is also slated to appear as Bob Cratchit in an upcoming adaptation of A Christmas Carol, starring Johnny Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge.
Grint’s return to acting has been deliberate, with a goal of working on “one thing every year.” Despite his long association with the Harry Potter series, he has expressed a fondness for the role that launched his career. “I’m fine with that,” he told the BBC in November, referring to being recognized as Ron Weasley. “I think it’s great. I love meeting people who really felt this was a part of their childhood.” He firmly dismissed any sense of being burdened by the role, stating, “No, absolutely not. I love it.”
The actor reflected on the experience of growing up during the decade-long run of the Harry Potter films, acknowledging the “sacrifices” made during that time. He also expressed optimism for the new generation of actors taking on the Harry Potter series, wishing them “all the best.”
