Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell & 2020 Election Challenges

March 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

President Donald Trump issued pardons to 77 individuals on Sunday, November 10, 2025, including his former lawyer Rudy Giuliani, attorneys John Eastman and Sidney Powell, and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. The sweeping action addressed individuals involved in a plot to overturn the 2020 presidential election results, specifically those implicated in the “fake electors” scheme.

The pardons, announced by Justice Department pardon attorney Ed Martin via a post on X, were described by Trump as ending “a grave national injustice perpetrated upon the American people following the 2020 presidential election and continue the process of national reconciliation.” The proclamation, dated Friday, explicitly excluded Trump himself from the clemency.

Giuliani, a former Recent York City mayor, had faced disbarment proceedings and financial penalties related to his efforts to challenge the election outcome. Powell and Eastman, both conservative attorneys, were central figures in developing and implementing legal strategies aimed at contesting the election results. Kenneth Chesebro, also pardoned, is a Justice Department attorney who played a role in the scheme. Additional pardons extended to Christina Bobb and Boris Epshteyn, further Trump advisors involved in the effort.

The pardons primarily cover federal crimes. However, the move is largely symbolic as many of those pardoned also face charges at the state level, which are unaffected by the presidential action. The individuals were allegedly involved in organizing alternate slates of electors from battleground states – including Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, and Michigan – that Joe Biden won.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the pardons were intended to halt what she characterized as “communist tactics” by the Biden administration, claiming that prosecution for challenging election results was akin to practices in countries like Venezuela.

The Justice Department under Trump had previously abandoned a case brought by special counsel Jack Smith against Trump himself, citing a policy against prosecuting sitting presidents following Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris. The pardons do not alter the outcome of that case, nor do they address any potential future legal challenges Trump may face.

Despite the broad scope of the pardons, the Justice Department has not commented on the criteria used to select the recipients beyond the stated aim of addressing perceived injustices related to the 2020 election. No further pardons or commutations have been announced as of this reporting.
