RTX's Pratt & Whitney and Collins Aerospace deploy automation in Singapore

RTX’s Pratt & Whitney and Collins Aerospace deploy automation in Singapore

October 9, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Pratt & Whitney Expands Singapore Automation Infrastructure

Pratt & Whitney is deploying artificial intelligence and automation across its Singapore MRO facilities to manage fleet growth, aerodynamic maintenance volume, and engine repair turnaround times, AeroTime reported on the sidelines of MRO Asia-Pacific 2026. As the broader aviation market moves toward fleet expansion in the region, maintenance hubs are leaning on digital inspection tools and robotic assembly modules to scale operating capacity without matching a linear increase in floor space or headcount.

The Tech TL;DR:

  • Pratt & Whitney is expanding its GTF engine network in Asia-Pacific to nine facilities, with seven currently operating and two more scheduled to come online by the end of 2026.
  • Flagship maintenance center Eagle Services Asia (ESA) utilizes AI-driven borescope analysis, AI-enhanced X-ray inspection, and high-pressure compressor stacking.
  • Collins Aerospace joint venture GASCA scaled nacelle maintenance volume fourfold over the past decade using autonomous inspection robots, automated parts delivery, and digital damage mapping with the same workforce size.

Regional Fleet Growth Drives Digital Adoption in Singapore

Within the next decade, Asia-Pacific is expected to become the world’s largest aviation market by fleet size, creating immediate bottlenecks for engine maintenance providers. Speaking to AeroTime, Sandra Eich, Vice President of Aftermarket Operations (APAC and Türkiye) for Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engines, noted that local ecosystem backing has accelerated technology adoption. “In the region, we have a lot of support, from the Economic Development Board here in Singapore and other industry partners that we work with, to really get AI technology and automation into our factories,” Eich said.

This deployment strategy relies on the Singapore Technology Accelerator, an in-house engineering group embedded directly within local shop floors. Eich’s team collaborates with technicians to identify operational bottlenecks where automated modules can add throughput. RTX signed a memorandum of understanding with Singapore’s Economic Development Board this year, committing more than $139 million to regional infrastructure expansion. At the same time, engine repair operations in Türkiye, Shanghai, and Christchurch share failure analysis data and repair procedures for the V2500 fleet across the enterprise network.

Automating Engine Overhauls at Eagle Services Asia

At Eagle Services Asia (ESA), Pratt & Whitney’s flagship joint venture with SIA Engineering Company founded in 1978, geared turbofan (GTF) overhauls account for roughly 70% of total shop volume. The facility processes the PW1100G-JM alongside the PW4000. Shop floor automation focuses on reducing historical failure rates in high-pressure compressor stacking—which ran near 30% in early manufacturing phases—by standardizing assembly via automated machinery.

Engineering management at ESA applies a phased automation framework, implementing discrete robotics before connecting systems into unified monitoring pipelines. While RTX is piloting isolated “lights-out” factory configurations in select shops, executive teams emphasize that operational priorities remain centered on reducing unplanned shop visits and shortening turn times. Every automated repair process undergoes strict qualification and certification validation prior to network-wide deployment.

Scaling Nacelle Repairs With Autonomous Systems at GASCA

A few blocks away, Collins Aerospace joint venture GASCA—established in 1995 with SIA Engineering Company—services nacelle components for commercial aircraft including the A350, A320neo, A220, and 787. According to Rodney Hua, Asia MRO General Manager at Collins, GASCA multiplied its production volume fourfold over the past decade while maintaining the same workforce and physical footprint. The facility achieves this through autonomous inspection robots, automated parts delivery systems, digital damage mapping, and laser-guided composite repair workflows.

Regional fleets are projected to expand by approximately 30% over the next five years, bringing a larger volume of commercial assets into the window where heavy nacelle maintenance becomes mandatory. Hua stated that this trajectory requires shifting maintenance schedules from reactive repairs toward predictive diagnostics fueled by historical component telemetry data.

Upskilling Technicians for AI-Assisted MRO Environments

As advanced robotics and automated quality control enter production lines, workforce requirements are shifting. Eich described organizational development as the critical next operational phase, noting that Pratt & Whitney is establishing partnerships with local technical schools to shape future curricula while building continuous education pipelines for existing personnel. “We want to make sure, especially when you introduce AI, that it is an operator-assisted tool and not replacing any of our operators,” Eich said. Employee feedback has reportedly remained positive, with technicians actively seeking out training to program automated machinery and interpret AI inspection outputs.
