RTÉ SIPTU Ballot: Workers Vote on Confidence in Management

by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Members of the Services, Industrial, Professional and Technical Union (SIPTU) at RTÉ are participating in a ballot to express their confidence in the public broadcaster’s senior leadership team and their current strategic direction, RTÉ News reported today.

The ballot, details of which were reported on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland program, asks SIPTU members to indicate whether they have confidence in the leadership’s strategy. The outcome of the vote is currently unknown.

This vote follows a period of scrutiny for RTÉ, Ireland’s national public service media organization. In January, SIPTU and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) members at Caredoc, a provider of out-of-hours medical services, accepted a pay proposal, according to RTÉ News. The agreement concluded negotiations regarding compensation for those workers.

SIPTU has also recently engaged with the government on issues beyond RTÉ. At the end of January, the union sought a meeting with government officials to discuss preparations for extreme weather events, emphasizing the demand for the public service to be adequately equipped to respond effectively, as reported by RTÉ News.

In November of last year, John King, then the General Secretary Elect of SIPTU, spoke publicly on matters relating to the union’s priorities, RTÉ News reported at the time.

As of this afternoon, RTÉ has not released the results of the confidence ballot, nor have they issued a statement responding to the vote.
