Royal Caribbean Cancels 2027 Miami Cruises: What Travelers Need to Know
MIAMI – Royal Caribbean International has canceled dozens of summer 2027 itineraries originally scheduled to depart from the Port of Miami, impacting thousands of travelers who had planned vacations years in advance. The cancellations specifically affect the Freedom of the Seas, a vessel capable of carrying nearly 4,000 passengers, which was slated for over 20 voyages between May and September of that year.
The decision marks a strategic shift for the cruise line, redirecting its operations toward other markets, according to a statement emailed to affected passengers. “As part of our ongoing itinerary planning process – which sometimes requires flexibility due to scheduling, port agreements, or operational needs – Freedom of the Seas will be reassigned for our summer 2027 season,” the company stated, as reported by Royal Caribbean Blog.
Royal Caribbean acknowledged the disruption to travelers’ plans, stating, “We know how much effort goes into planning your vacation and apologize for the inconvenience.” A company spokesperson further explained to People magazine that fleet planning is a “dynamic process” regularly reviewed based on demand, capacity requirements, and broader fleet considerations.
The canceled cruises encompassed a range of itineraries, from short getaways to the Bahamas to longer voyages throughout the Caribbean. Destinations no longer scheduled to be visited by the Freedom of the Seas from Miami during that period include Aruba and Curaçao on extended itineraries, Nassau and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas, and various ports in the Dominican Republic.
To address passenger concerns, Royal Caribbean is offering full refunds, including prepaid services. Passengers also have the option to be rebooked on other ships operating from Miami, such as the Wonder of the Seas, Jewel of the Seas, or Adventure of the Seas, subject to fare protection policies.
The move is driven by Royal Caribbean’s decision to reposition the Freedom of the Seas to Southampton, in the United Kingdom. The ship will serve the European market, catering to travelers from Great Britain and Ireland, where the company has identified growing commercial opportunities. According to Royal Caribbean’s website, the Freedom of the Seas offers attractions such as The Perfect Storm water slides, the FlowRider surf simulator, laser tag, a rock-climbing wall, and an ice-skating rink.
This adjustment comes amid reports of similar cancellations by other cruise lines, as noted by the New York Post, suggesting a broader recalculation of global routes by major cruise operators to optimize profitability in response to fluctuating international demand. The Freedom of the Seas, a Freedom-class ship launched in 2006 and refitted in 2020, typically sails Caribbean itineraries from Miami, with a double-occupancy capacity of around 3,926 guests and a crew of approximately 1,360.
