Rotterdam Elections 2024: Green-Left/Labour Wins & Coalition Talks Begin
Rotterdam has shifted leftward following municipal elections on March 24, 2026, with GroenLinks-PvdA emerging as the largest party, securing 11 seats on the city council. The result, a gain of approximately 3,300 votes over Leefbaar Rotterdam, positions GroenLinks-PvdA to lead coalition formation, according to preliminary results reported by Reportersonline.nl.
Jeroen Postma, the GroenLinks-PvdA list leader, acknowledged the challenges ahead in forming a governing coalition. “This result does not give many options,” he stated, as reported by de Volkskrant. The party intends to prioritize affordable housing, reducing homelessness, and increasing green spaces within the city, but navigating a coalition agreement will require careful negotiation.
The outcome has prompted an unusual wager. Following a similar pledge from Rotterdam’s Mayor Carola Schouten regarding voter turnout, Postma has publicly committed to abseiling down the Euromast tower if his party secures more than ten seats. “Okay, okay, by this I agree. If we obtain more than ten seats, I will abseil,” Postma said, according to de Volkskrant.
The election results suggest a potential shift away from the traditionally right-leaning political landscape of Rotterdam. However, the path to a left-leaning city government remains uncertain. A coalition involving GroenLinks-PvdA, D66, VVD, and Denk is considered a logical continuation of the current governing structure, according to Reportersonline.nl. The role of the VVD, and its potential aversion to a GroenLinks-PvdA led administration, will be a key factor in the formation process.
The GroenLinks-PvdA victory follows a strong national showing for the party, as highlighted in a recent statement from Jesse Klaver, reported on the GroenLinks-PvdA Rotterdam website. The party is now tasked with appointing an official negotiator to commence the complex process of building a new city administration.
Several newly elected council members also bring national profiles to the Rotterdam council. Members of the FVD, DENK, and JA21 parties have been elected to the Rotterdam council, according to AD.nl.
