Rosalía Reveals Paquita la del Barrio Inspired Her Song La Perla
During her August 22, 2026 performance at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City, Spanish superstar Rosalía revealed that her heartbreak anthem “La Perla” was primarily inspired by legendary ranchera singer Paquita la del Barrio and her iconic track “Rata de Dos Patas.” Performing before 16,500 fans on the opening night of her five-city-block run in the capital, the Catalan artist credited the foundational Mexican tradition for shaping her current musical era.
The Ranchera Roots Behind a Modern Heartbreak Anthem
Rosalía addressed the crowd during her LUX tour stop, emphasizing her deep artistic connection to Mexico. According to Ocesa figures cited in reporting of the event, the 16,500 attendees witnessed the artist draw a direct line between traditional Mexican music and flamenco styles. She explained that the invective directed at the “emotional terrorist” featured in “La Perla” draws heavily from the spirit of Paquita la del Barrio’s classic catalog.

“Ladies and gentlemen, without ‘Rata de dos patas,’ ‘La Perla’ wouldn’t exist,” Rosalía told the audience, offering public thanks to the late ranchera icon. “So, thank you very much, Mexico, and thank you, Paquita la del Barrio. Today, I offer heartfelt thanks for the inspiration.”
“La Perla” was recorded as a duet with the singer from the Mexican-American trio Yahritza y Su Esencia, and featured prominently on Rosalía’s 2025 album.
Honoring a Legacy of Mexican Music
The tribute to Paquita la del Barrio—whose celebrated repertoire also includes classics such as “Tres Veces Te Engañé” and “Las Rodilleras”—arrived more than a year after the singer’s death in February 2025 at the age of 77.
On-Stage Confessions and Special Guest Appearances
The Mexico City performance also featured a guest appearance by pop star Kenia Os during the show’s signature “confessional” segment. Os, whose romantic relationship with Peso Pluma concluded in June “on the best terms,” discussed her personal criteria for dating and recounted previous relationship dynamics. Rosalía joined the conversation, telling the audience that fellow musicians often share a common trait: “They know how to sing, but they don’t know how to maintain harmony in a relationship.”
In addition to the guest segment, Rosalía updated her wardrobe for live renditions of tracks including “Sexo, Violencia y Llantas,” “Reliquia,” and “Dios es un Stalker.” During her performance of “Reliquia,” she modified the lyric to honor her hosts, singing, “I grew up and learned boldness in Mexico and Barcelona.”
The artist’s schedule in Mexico includes remaining dates at the Palacio de los Deportes on August 24, 26, 28, and 29, following earlier concert stops in Guadalajara on August 15 and 16, and Monterrey on August 19.
