The Isley Brothers lead singer Ronald Isley recently revealed a five-week hospitalization to fans in Philadelphia, sharing the health update on stage at age 85 alongside his wife, Kandy, while celebrating the group’s 67-year legacy in the city where their musical journey began.

On-Stage Revelation in Philadelphia Marks Rare Health Update

During a live performance in Philadelphia, R&B icon Ronald Isley addressed the audience regarding a medical absence that kept him away from the spotlight for more than a month. According to stage remarks captured on video, the 85-year-old singer removed his sunglasses to discuss the multi-week health challenge. “I was in the hospital for five weeks,” Ronald told the crowd, speaking after he was brought out to the stage to the sounds of “For the Love of You.” He did not disclose the specific medical reasons behind the extended stay, instead directing his focus toward the longevity of the group and their ties to the city. “And I want each and every one of you to know everything started here in Philadelphia. Sixty-seven years ago. And you’re still here.”

Decades of Touring and Industry Resilience

The Isley Brothers formed in the 1950s as a trio hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, and have evolved through multiple eras of American popular music. Today, the core lineup features Ronald Isley alongside his younger brother, Ernie Isley, who handles bass, electric guitar, and songwriting. Despite changing industry tides, the brothers have maintained an active recording and touring schedule. Their 2022 release, Make Me Say It Again, Girl, featured a collaboration with pop superstar Beyoncé, a project that highlighted their ongoing connection to contemporary music trends. “It’s very important to work with the new generation,” Ronald stated in a 2022 interview with Billboard. “That’s what keeps you up with the music and what’s going on and what they’re feeling… It keeps us young and in the business and know where we are going with the business.”

The Evolution of a Musical Legacy

Ernie Isley noted the difficulty of sustaining a career past an initial breakthrough during the group’s 2022 press cycle with Billboard. “A lot of artists, especially when you start out, it’s doing that first record, and that’s the breakthrough — but the trick is, what are you going to do the second time or the third time and so on? Some people run out of gas.”
