Romania Weather: Warming Trend & Rain, Snow Still Possible in Mountains

Romania is bracing for a shift in weather patterns following a period of severe winter conditions, with temperatures expected to rise significantly in the coming days. After experiencing what officials have called the most intense episode of blizzards and snowfall this winter, the country is now anticipating milder temperatures and rainfall.

Florinela Georgescu, director of forecasting at the National Meteorological Administration (ANM), stated on Digi24 that a warming trend will begin in the southwest and west of the country starting Wednesday. “It begins a process of weather improvement, categorically, because next week we expect a significant warming process,” Georgescu said. She cautioned, yet, that colder weather could return as early as Saturday.

The warming trend will bring rain to the western, north-central, and northern regions, with a mix of rain and snow possible in the south-southeast. Higher elevations in the mountains may still see snowfall. Temperatures are forecast to reach as high as 14 degrees Celsius in the west-central parts of the country by mid-week, while other regions will experience temperatures between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius, according to Georgescu.

The ANM has been issuing extended alerts for extreme weather, and Georgescu indicated that weather patterns characteristic of the time of year are expected to continue until around February 24th. This recent period of severe weather was described as “the most severe episode this winter 2025-2026.”

The shift in weather comes after a period of disruption across the country, including record snowfall in Bucharest and reports of ambulances becoming stranded in snowdrifts in Iași, requiring the assistance of firefighters to reach a woman who had given birth. Several localities in Gorj county were reportedly isolated due to muddy conditions.

On January 27th, the ANM issued a warning of another cold spell expected to bring further snowfall, according to a Digi24 report. Prior to that, on January 13th, the ANM had announced a temporary warming period followed by a severe cold snap.
