Rock Island Bridge in Kansas City to Open April 1 After Delays
Kansas City’s Rock Island Bridge, a repurposed former railroad crossing over the Kansas River, is scheduled to open to the public on April 1st, according to an announcement made by project CEO Mike Zeller on Sunday. The opening, initially slated for 2023 and subsequently delayed multiple times, will mark the culmination of a multi-year effort to transform the historic structure into a unique entertainment destination.
The bridge, originally constructed in 1905 by the American Bridge Company, served as a vital rail and cattle crossing before falling into disuse in the 1970s. Capable of supporting up to 3 million pounds of live animals, the bridge’s robust design proved suitable for a new purpose, according to Zeller. The redevelopment project aims to reconnect the West Bottoms neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri, with Kansas City, Kansas, offering pedestrian access and a variety of entertainment options.
Flying Truss, LLC, the development company leading the project, secured a long-term lease on the bridge from Kansas City, Kansas, in 2018. The company then formed partnerships with city and state governments to realize the vision of “America’s First Trailhead and Entertainment District Over a River,” as described in company materials. The project required a combination of private investments, philanthropic contributions, and public funding.
Among the planned features are the American Royal Hall, a 60-foot-high, weather-protected event space with a capacity of up to 300 people, and the Kansas City River House, a restaurant offering seasonal menus and picnic-style dining. The bridge will also include a trailhead and public restrooms. Free parking will be available on the east side of the bridge, near the venue entrance.
The idea for repurposing the bridge originated with Mike Zeller, who, whereas on a boating trip on the Kansas River, jokingly suggested turning the abandoned structure into a restaurant called “Chicken on a Bridge.” This initial concept evolved into a larger vision for revitalizing the area and creating a new attraction for the region. Zeller, previously the chief development officer for Kansas City PBS, formed Flying Truss with partners Mike Laddin and John McGurk to pursue the project.
The opening follows years of setbacks, including delays stemming from work to raise the bridge and ongoing construction challenges. Developers announced in June 2025 that River House would be the restaurant featured on the bridge. Zeller stated on social media, “It’s been a long time coming, and we can’t wait to share this moment with our partners, supporters, and you.”
