Santobono Hospital Pioneers Robotic Treatment for Childhood Calculosis
The Pediatric Urology complex operating unit at Santobono Hospital has become the frist pediatric center in Italy to adopt a new robotic technology for treating calculosis – the formation of stones - in children. This advancement promises increased precision and improved outcomes for young patients.
The project’s success is attributed to the generous support of “SOS Santobono,” a local third-sector association (AES).
Previously, endoscopic tools were maneuvered manually. The new robot, as explained by Giovanni di Iorio, Director of Pediatric Urology, features a multifunction arm. This arm drives the flexible endoscope wiht millimeter precision, a critical capability given the small anatomical spaces within children.
“The robot’s precision is crucial in pediatric age, where anatomical spaces are extremely reduced,” Di Iorio stated. The robotic arm guides the endoscope directly to the location of the stone.
This innovation is the result of strong collaboration between the Pediatric Nephrology department, led by Gabriele Malgieri, and pediatric Urological Surgery, directed by Giovanni Di Iorio.
rodolfo Conenna, general Manager of Santobono Pausilipon Aorn, emphasized that this advancement strengthens the hospital’s position as a national reference pediatric center.
The increasing prevalence of childhood calculosis globally is driving demand for less invasive and more precise treatment options. Robotic surgery represents a important step forward in pediatric urology, offering the potential for faster recovery times and reduced complications compared to traditional methods. further research will focus on long-term outcomes and expanding the application of this technology to other pediatric urological conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is calculosis in children?
Calculosis refers to the formation of stones in the urinary tract of children.these stones can cause pain, infection, and perhaps kidney damage if left untreated.
How does the new robotic system improve treatment?
The robotic system allows for millimeter-precise maneuvering of endoscopic tools, which is especially vital in children due to their smaller anatomical structures. this precision minimizes trauma and improves the success rate of stone removal.
Who supported the implementation of this technology at Santobono Hospital?
the project was made possible thanks to the support of the Aes (third sector body) “SOS Santobono.”
What role did collaboration play in this advancement?
Strong collaboration between the Pediatric Nephrology and Pediatric Urological Surgery departments was essential for the successful implementation and integration of the robotic system.
What is Santobono Hospital’s role in pediatric care?
This advancement reinforces Santobono Pausilipon Aorn’s position as a leading national reference pediatric center.
