Marvel Studios Remembers Robert Redford
Marvel Studios mourns the loss of Robert Redford, a cinematic icon who passed away on September 16 at the age of 89. A celebrated actor, director, and champion of independent film, Redford left an indelible mark on the industry.
Redford joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014, portraying Alexander Pierce in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. His nuanced performance brought a compelling complexity to the character of the U.S. government leader revealed to be a long-standing Hydra operative. The role drew parallels to Redford’s earlier work in 1970s thrillers like Three Days of the Condor and All the President’s Men, films that defined a genre and showcased his talent for portraying characters navigating complex moral landscapes.
He reprised his role as Alexander Pierce for a final on-screen appearance in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
Throughout a career spanning decades, Redford delivered memorable performances in films including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, and Barefoot in the Park. He also achieved critical and commercial success behind the camera, winning an Academy Award for directing his 1980 debut, Ordinary People.
Beyond his work in front of and behind the camera, Redford was a dedicated environmental advocate and a passionate supporter of independent filmmaking. He founded the Sundance institute and the Sundance Film Festival, institutions that have profoundly impacted the landscape of American cinema.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who worked with Redford on both The Winter Soldier and Endgame, shared their grief: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of the incomparable Robert Redford – a true legend whose acting and directing inspired us throughout our careers. His legacy will live on through his unusual films, his incredible performances, his tireless activism, and the profound influence that Sundance has had on the trajectory of the industry, and the lives of thousands of filmmakers. There are very few people who have impacted modern storytelling as significantly as Robert … and we are deeply grateful for our time with him.”
All of us at Marvel studios are honored to have collaborated with robert redford and extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
