Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult Emerging as Top Contenders for James Bond Role
Robert Pattinson has emerged as a surprise contender for the role of James Bond, joining a short list of actors who participated in screen tests held the weekend of October 24.
The Screen Tests at Bray Studios
Final screen tests for the next 007 took place at Bray Studios in the United Kingdom, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter. While initial industry speculation identified Callum Turner, Jack Lowden, and Josh O’Connor as the primary candidates, subsequent reports confirmed that the search expanded to include at least two additional mystery actors. The Hollywood Reporter identified Robert Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult as the two established names who joined the testing pool. These sessions arrived as the franchise runs its first production cycle under Amazon ownership, following the February 2025 acquisition of creative rights from the Broccoli family.

The search currently excludes previously rumored contenders Jacob Elordi and Jack O’Connell, though speculation regarding Elordi briefly resurfaced before being dismissed. Industry observers note that the two mystery actors are considered notable and established names, above the level of the still-rising likes of Callum Turner and company.
Reporter Justin Kroll characterized the mystery candidates by noting, One stars in a 2026 Amazon pic and another likes to wear a mask,
a description that prompted widespread public discussion involving actors such as Nicholas Galitzine, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Tom Holland.
The Shift Toward Established Talent
The decision to test an actor of Pattinson’s profile challenges the conventional wisdom that the Bond franchise would avoid casting a globally recognized star. Pattinson, 40, currently anchors the DC Studios Batman franchise. His recent professional trajectory includes a collaboration with Bond director Denis Villeneuve on Dune: Part 3, scheduled for release on December 18.

Pattinson, who is currently filming The Batman Part II in London, has built a reputation as a favorite of auteurs including Robert Eggers, the Safdie brothers, and Christopher Nolan. Nolan’s 2020 spy film Tenet is now viewed by some as a de facto audition for the Bond role. Pattinson’s career trajectory includes his early breakthrough in 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and his rise to global fame in the Twilight series. He is currently experiencing a peak professional period, featuring in Nolan’s The Odyssey, the A24 production The Drama, and the A24 film Primetime.
The casting process remains fluid, with representatives for Amazon declining to comment on the status of the search. While tabloids have previously linked Turner and O’Connor to the role, these reports have been characterized by industry sources as speculative or fan-driven rather than verified casting decisions. The current search for a successor to Daniel Craig—who concluded his tenure with 2021’s No Time to Die—marks the 21st anniversary of the 2005 decision to cast Craig in the role.

Franchise Stakes and Production Dynamics
With the franchise now under the control of Amazon, producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman are managing a transition for the series. Daniel Craig’s five-film tenure previously delivered the franchise’s only $1 billion box office performance with 2012’s Skyfall.
