Robert Mueller, Former FBI Director, Dies at 81 | Russia Probe Leader Passes Away

March 21, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Robert S. Mueller III, the former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation who led the investigation into potential links between the Trump campaign and Russia, died Friday evening at the age of 81, his family announced. “With deep sadness, we share that Bob passed away Friday night,” according to a family statement released Saturday.

Mueller’s tenure as FBI director spanned 12 years, beginning just one week before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Nominated by President George W. Bush, he remained in the role through the presidency of Barack Obama, who asked him to continue serving beyond the standard ten-year term, making him the second-longest serving director in the bureau’s history, after J. Edgar Hoover.

The attacks of 9/11 fundamentally reshaped the FBI’s priorities under Mueller’s leadership, shifting its focus from domestic crime investigations to preventing terrorism. This transition demanded significant changes within the agency and its leadership, according to reports.

After leaving the FBI in 2013, Mueller returned to public service in 2017 when he was appointed as special counsel by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. His mandate was to investigate allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and potential coordination between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

The special counsel investigation, which lasted nearly two years, produced a 448-page report detailing numerous contacts between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and Russia. However, the report did not establish a criminal conspiracy between the campaign and the Russian government. It too documented attempts to influence the investigation, but Mueller declined to make a definitive determination on whether President Trump had committed a crime, citing Justice Department policy against indicting a sitting president.

Throughout the investigation, Mueller maintained a low public profile, rarely making public appearances or statements, contributing to his image as a reserved and meticulous investigator. His family has requested privacy at this time.
