Robert Mueller Dies: Trump Responds to Former FBI Director’s Death
Donald Trump reacted to the death of Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and potential collusion with the Trump campaign, with a statement expressing satisfaction.
“I’m glad he’s dead,” Trump reportedly told a group of supporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, according to multiple news outlets. The former president’s remark came shortly after news broke on Friday, March 20, 2026, of Mueller’s passing at the age of 81.
Mueller served as FBI director from 2001 to 2013, appointed by President George W. Bush. He oversaw a significant expansion of the bureau’s counterterrorism capabilities following the September 11th attacks. In 2017, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as special counsel to investigate the allegations of Russian interference, a role he held until 2019.
The Mueller investigation resulted in the indictment of numerous Russian individuals and entities, but did not establish sufficient evidence to conclude that the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its efforts to influence the election. The report did detail numerous contacts between the campaign and Russian-linked individuals. Trump repeatedly characterized the investigation as a “witch hunt.”
Robert Mueller’s death was confirmed by the Associated Press on Saturday, March 21, 2026. The circumstances surrounding his death have not been publicly disclosed.
The White House has not yet issued a formal statement regarding Mueller’s passing.
