Winston-Salem, NC – Robbie Brewer, a veteran driver in the sportsman Division at Bowman Gray Stadium, died Sunday following a single-car accident during a race. He was 53 years old.
The incident occurred on the quarter-mile track at bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North carolina. Brewer’s car collided head-on with a wall near the start-finish line during a 20-lap Sportsman Division race. Track safety workers removed the roof of the vehicle to extricate Brewer,who was then transported by ambulance to Atrium Health Wake forest Baptist hospital,where he was pronounced dead.
“We are saddened by the passing of Robbie Brewer after he was transported to an area medical facility following an on-track medical incident,” track officials stated. “Robbie was a talented and passionate racer, and highly respected competitor among his peers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Robbie’s family and friends at this time.”
Details surrounding the medical emergency leading to the crash have not been released. The Winston-Salem Journal reported the incident.
Bowman Gray Stadium,a historic .40-kilometer oval,regularly draws thousands of fans on Saturday nights during the spring and summer racing season,featuring competition across four divisions. The stadium also hosted the NASCAR Cup Series preseason exhibition event, the Clash, in February 2024.
Brewer began racing at Bowman Gray in 1990 and accumulated nearly 260 starts in the sportsman Division. he secured the division’s points championship in 2011. He was a consistent competitor known for his skill and dedication to the sport.
Fellow driver Brad Lewis, whose race shop is located near Brewer’s home, described Brewer as a mentor and close friend. “He was like a big brother to me even though we were not that far apart in age,” Lewis said. “He was a wheelman thru and through. I’m not only going to honor him the rest of the season but for as long as we race out there.He’ll be missed.”
