Rob Lowe Criticizes ‘Disneyfication’ of Acting & Lack of Authenticity in Young Hollywood Stars

March 22, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Actor Rob Lowe has publicly criticized a perceived shift in acting styles among younger performers, attributing it to the influence of television networks like Disney and The CW. Lowe voiced his concerns during a recent episode of his podcast, “Literally! With Rob Lowe,” suggesting a lack of authenticity in performances originating from these platforms.

The discussion, which featured comedian Kevin Nealon, centered on observable patterns in contemporary acting. Nealon noted a growing tendency for actors to pause at specific points within dialogue, creating a noticeable cadence. “I’m sure you watch actors, and you see a lot of the tricks they’re doing,” Nealon said, as reported by Fox News. “Sometimes, it’s the cadence of the delivery…you say, ‘OK, he stopped there.’ And then you continue that thought.”

Lowe strongly agreed, characterizing the trend as problematic. “Oh yeah. Young actors,” he stated. “And it’s — how do I position this? If it’s a binary choice, it’s a excellent thing, but I don’t love it. And I think it’s a reaction to the Disneyfication of acting, where all these kids have come up through all the tentacles of The CW and Disney and all of those types of young people shows. Like, what’s the one … like ‘Hannah Montana’s’ of the world — all that stuff.”

Lowe’s critique extends beyond mere technique, expressing concern that the performances lack genuine human quality. “That behavior on screen is not recognizable as anything any human beings have ever done before,” he said. “You watch those shows, and I don’t understand what they’re doing, but … there’s no resemblance to anything truthful. And what it is clearly is young kids who are new and don’t know — God bless them — and they’re being directed by hacks.”

The actor, who rose to prominence as a member of the “Brat Pack” in the 1980s alongside actors like Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore, and Andrew McCarthy, implied a contrast between the training and experiences of his generation and those of current young actors. Films like “St. Elmo’s Fire,” “The Breakfast Club,” and “About Last Night” defined a generation, according to AOL.com, and Lowe recently reflected on the filming of “St. Elmo’s Fire” as particularly emblematic of the decade.

Lowe’s son, John Owen Lowe, is also pursuing an acting career, and the elder Lowe recently shared advice with him, encouraging him to focus on content creation. “And the irony is, now that’s really, I’m so proud of him creating this new show, and that’s the thing I think today, as opposed to when I came up, there’s no excuse to not make your own stuff today,” Lowe told Fox News Digital. John Owen Lowe recently sold a show to Apple TV+.

Fox Nation is also actively seeking to cultivate new talent and projects, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with Kevin Nealon’s hiking celebrity talk show recently landing a spot on the platform. TheWrap reported that Fox Nation’s strategy focuses on “passion projects, not politics,” as it attempts to establish a stronger presence within the entertainment industry.

Disney did not respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital regarding Lowe’s statements.
