Cyclist Abruptly Ends Road riding After near Miss, Cites Increasing Danger
LONDON - A cyclist has announced a shift away from road riding following a recent collision with a van and growing concerns about driver behavior and road safety. The rider, who wishes to remain anonymous, detailed the incident and a broader pattern of perilous conditions that lead to the decision.
The incident occurred when a van turned abruptly across a cycle lane, leaving the cyclist with no option but to collide with the vehicle. While thankfully uninjured, the driver reportedly left the scene. This event, coupled with frequent observations of drivers using mobile phones and aggressive driving maneuvers, proved to be the final catalyst.
“Judging by what I see on my regular rides to the office, I’m surprised there aren’t more accidents,” the cyclist wrote. “The number of drivers glued to their phones depresses me. It’s terrifying, actually.”
The cyclist also acknowledged dangerous behavior from other cyclists, noting instances of riders speeding through red lights and weaving through traffic. These observations further eroded confidence in road safety.
Consequently, the cyclist is now prioritizing off-road riding, specifically gravel biking, despite the added inconvenience. “I’m still keen to head out with mates on quiet lanes when I can, but riding through towns and cities has lost it’s appeal for me,” they stated.
The decision reflects a growing concern among cyclists regarding road safety in the UK. While advocating for infrastructure improvements similar to those found in the Netherlands, the cyclist is choosing to limit exposure to possibly dangerous conditions in the interim. This move underscores a broader trend of cyclists seeking safer alternatives to traditional road riding.
