Wisconsin Lawmakers Aim to Replicate UW-Green Bay‘s Rising Phoenix Program Statewide
GREEN BAY, WI – A highly successful program at UW-Green Bay that allows high school students to earn notable college credit is poised for potential statewide expansion, thanks to a recent $1 million allocation in the state budget and bipartisan support from Wisconsin lawmakers.
The Rising Phoenix program enables students to take college courses during their junior and senior years of high school, potentially earning up to two years’ worth of college credit. This initiative aims to reduce the financial burden of higher education and accelerate students’ academic pathways.
The program’s impact is already evident at UW-Green Bay, where officials report that 34% of students who participate in Rising Phoenix ultimately enroll at the university. This strong enrollment rate underscores the program’s effectiveness in attracting and retaining students.
State Senator Jamie Wall expressed enthusiasm for extending the program’s reach beyond UW-Green Bay. ”The reputation of the program had preceded itself, not just among my Democratic colleagues but among Republicans as well,” Senator Wall stated. “So I’d love to see a world where there’s a Rising Titans program at UW-Oshkosh and a Rising Pioneers program at UW-Platteville, et cetera. That’s one of the things I’d like to work toward over the future years.”
The expansion would involve creating similar programs tailored to the identities of other UW System campuses, fostering a consistent and accessible pathway for high school students across the state to gain a head start on their college education.
Interested students and families can find more details about the Rising phoenix program on the UW-Green Bay website.
