Rising Gas Prices Squeeze Delivery Drivers & Businesses | Relief Efforts Emerge
DoorDash is implementing an emergency relief program for its drivers in the United States, effective immediately through April 26, 2026, as rising fuel costs driven by the ongoing conflict with Iran put a strain on gig workers.
The program centers around two key benefits, according to a statement released by the company. Drivers using the DoorDash Crimson Visa debit card will receive 10% cash back on all gas purchases. Drivers who complete at least 125 miles of deliveries each week will be eligible for weekly relief payments. These payments will range from $5 to $15, depending on the total mileage driven – $5 for 125 miles (equivalent to roughly $1.00 per gallon in savings), $10 for 200 miles (approximately $1.25 per gallon), and $15 for 250 miles (around $1.50 per gallon).
Drivers who qualify for both the cash-back offer and the mileage-based payments could see total savings between $1.40 and $1.90 per gallon, depending on their weekly driving distance.
“Rising gas prices have a real impact on Dashers, especially those who are delivering the most,” said Cody Aughney, vice president of dasher and logistics at DoorDash. “This program is about giving Dashers real savings at the pump.”
The move comes as gas prices nationwide have been increasing sharply, with some reports indicating prices nearing $4 a gallon. DoorDash framed the initiative as part of a broader effort to support its driver network, recognizing the reliance of gig workers on their vehicles for income. The company’s announcement follows similar concerns raised by other businesses regarding the impact of the Iran conflict on fuel costs and the broader economy.
