Rising Gas Prices: Belgium’s LNG Supply & Zeebrugge Port Impact
A tanker carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar docked in Zeebrugge, Belgium, on Saturday, March 22, 2026, marking what is currently expected to be the last shipment from the Gulf nation in the foreseeable future, according to Fluxys, Belgium’s gas grid operator.
The arrival of the tanker coincides with a period of rising gas prices driven by disruptions to supply, as reported by VRT News. The situation is further complicated by recent attacks on energy infrastructure in Qatar and Iran, which have contributed to significant increases in both oil and gas prices and are impacting the global LNG market, according to Kenniswest.
The timing of the shipment is particularly sensitive given the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. MSN reports that the arrival of LNG from Qatar is the last currently scheduled from the country, raising concerns about potential supply shortages in Europe.
While the precise impact on Belgian gas reserves and prices remains to be seen, the reduced flow from Qatar adds to existing pressures on the European energy market. The attacks on Qatari LNG facilities, as detailed by De Tijd, have heightened anxieties about the security of supply and the potential for further price volatility.
Fluxys has not yet commented on potential alternative sources to compensate for the reduced Qatari supply, and no further LNG tankers from Qatar are currently scheduled to arrive in Zeebrugge.
