Ricky Gervais and others pay tribute to Sir Patrick Stewart
Sir Patrick Stewart has died, prompting heartfelt tributes from figures from entertainment, football, and charitable organizations.
Tributes From Collaborators and Football Clubs
“I still can’t believe he agreed to do this scene. And he didn’t even mind when I ruined every take,” comedian Ricky Gervais said, sharing a video of the pair giggling during bloopers for the BBC programme Extras, where Sir Patrick made a memorable guest appearance. Gervais described the late actor as a “legend,” bbc.co.uk reported.
Beyond the screen, Sir Patrick maintained a lifelong connection to his Yorkshire origins as a dedicated supporter of the English Football League club Huddersfield Town. The club honored him as a “titan of his craft.”
Fiercely proud of his Yorkshire roots, Sir Patrick was a Terrier in every sense, and we’re proud to have counted him as one of our own.
Advocacy Work in Later Life
In his later years, Sir Patrick channeled personal experience into public advocacy, campaigning against domestic violence after witnessing his mother suffer abuse at the hands of his father. He became an ambassador for the domestic abuse charity Refuge in 2007.
Hetti Barkworth-Nanton, Refuge’s board chair, noted it had been a privilege to watch his endless devotion to the cause, adding that he broke down barriers and taboos on the subject.

The Alzheimer’s Society also marked his passing, as CEO Michelle Dyson observed that his death serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating impact dementia has on families worldwide, describing him as an extraordinarily talented and much-loved actor admired by millions.
