Rick Davies, Supertramp Co-Founder and Frontman, Dies at 81
Rick Davies, the pianist and vocalist whose distinctive sound was central to Supertramp’s enduring success, has died at the age of 81.The news was confirmed by the band, marking the end of an era for the progressive rock group known for hits like “The Logical Song” and “Breakfast in America.”
Davies’ soulful vocals and signature Wurlitzer playing were the heartbeat of Supertramp’s sound, co-leading the band alongside roger Hodgson. “His music and legacy continue to inspire many and bears testament to the fact that great songs never die, thay live on,” a statement from the band read.
Born in Swindon in 1944, Davies began his musical journey as a drummer before transitioning to keyboards. In 1969, he advertised in Melody Maker seeking musicians for a new band, leading to a pivotal connection with Roger Hodgson.Initially performing as Daddy, the group soon rebranded as Supertramp, with Davies and Hodgson sharing frontman duties.
Supertramp achieved their breakthrough with Davies’ composition, “Bloody Well Right,” and continued to build a devoted following with subsequent hits including Hodgson’s ”Give a little Bit” and “The Logical Song.” Their 1979 album, Breakfast in America, became a global phenomenon, selling over 30 million copies and earning two Grammy Awards, featuring the hit singles “The Logical Song,” “Take the Long Way Home,” and the title track.
Following Hodgson’s departure in 1983 to pursue a solo career, Davies remained the sole original member of Supertramp, continuing to lead the band through various iterations. Despite creative disputes and legal battles-including a 2021 royalties lawsuit settled with Davies in 2023, and a recent August 2024 US court ruling ordering Hodgson to share songwriting royalties-Davies’ commitment to music endured. He continued performing, often under the moniker Ricky and the Rockets, even after receiving a cancer diagnosis.Davies is survived by his wife, Sue, who has managed Supertramp since 1984. His musical contributions have left an indelible mark on rock music history, ensuring Supertramp’s legacy will resonate for generations to come.
