Ria Webb completes egg freezing cycle in Chelmsford after relationship ends

November 8, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Ria Webb, a 31-year-old patient support adviser from Chelmsford, froze her eggs at a local fertility clinic following the end of a relationship, as bbc.co.uk reported.

The Tech TL;DR:

  • The Event: Ria Webb underwent an egg freezing cycle at age 31, storing her genetic material at -194C (-381F).
  • The Context: Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority figures show 6,932 cycles in 2023, up from 2,567 in 2019.
  • The Reality: Clinical embryologist Alicia Barker emphasizes that the procedure does not serve as a guaranteed insurance policy for future family planning.

Daily Injections Administered During a Harry Styles Concert

Webb consulted with a specialist before beginning a daily routine of medication and self-administered injections to stimulate egg production. One of these required doses was administered inside a restroom at a Harry Styles concert. The extraction process followed, after which her biological material was placed into secure storage at the clinic.

If she decides to use the stored material in the future, the eggs will undergo a thawing process and insemination before any resulting embryo is placed into her uterus. Webb described the outcome as a massive weight lifted from her shoulders regarding life timelines. “I felt like my time was running out, you hit 30 and you’re talking about children,” Webb told bbc.com. “It wasn’t until I came out of a relationship I was like, ‘This is something I probably should do for yourself to give myself that security’.”

National Trends and Clinical Realities in Fertility Storage

Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority figures recorded 6,932 egg freezing cycles in 2023, marking a sharp increase from the 2,567 cycles logged in 2019.

“Egg freezing is an absolutely amazing development to give us women this option later in life,” Barker told bbc.com. “It’s not an insurance policy, egg freezing doesn’t guarantee a baby later in life.”

“It’s very empowering, I’ve taken control of my path,” she stated to bbc.com.
