Review “Do Not Let the Fire Go Out” by Miriam Toews

this book is one of those that sat on my shelves for some time, and I finally decided to delve into the story. Following the plot proved challenging, as it is indeed not a simple read, but I did enjoy it, even though recommending it might be difficult. I am speaking of “Do Not let the Fire Go Out” by Miriam Toews.

“Do Not Let the Fire Go Out” is narrated through the voice of Swiv,a nine-year-old girl-an age when we begin questioning our identity and place in the world. She lives with her pregnant mother and her grandmother, Elvira, an exceptional Mennonite Christian who championed her independence and ideals without abandoning her faith, all while navigating the complexities of the adult world and the absence of her father.

I typically refrain from referencing author biographies in my reviews, but learning about Miriam Toews’s life surprised me and helped me understand the personal basis of her novels.

The narrative voice of the young girl is effective in addressing profound and vital life issues such as death, mental health, and suicide. Swiv is surrounded by these themes and asks many questions, typical for her age, questions that even adults struggle to answer. She lives with a family that might be considered unconventional, but the relationship between grandmother and granddaughter-and, to a lesser extent, with her mother-struck me as a beautiful example of sorority.

As mentioned earlier, recommending this book is difficult because its intensely emotional approach and uneven pacing may not provide a fully satisfying experience for all readers. Having previously read Toews’s “Small Important Misfortunes,” I’ve concluded that her unique perspective on life remains consistent.

Through subtle sarcasm and humor, we experience life alongside the three protagonists: a grandmother who, despite her ailments and fading memory, remains a pillar of the family; a mother overwhelmed by life’s hardships; and a girl forced to mature too quickly. This is a story that is sure to prompt reflection.
