Return to Ajax, or Stay at Antwerp? Marc Overmars Has Made His Decision – Football News
Amsterdam, Netherlands – Marc Overmars has definitively ruled out a return to Ajax, despite recent approaches from his former club following the departure of technical director Alex Kroes. The Antwerp technical director confirmed he will honor his current contract, ending speculation linking him back to the Amsterdam club.
Overmars, who previously spent ten years with Ajax as a player and technical director, was identified as a potential candidate to stabilize the club amidst ongoing turmoil both on and off the pitch. Though, the dutchman stated, ”I have a soft spot for Ajax and amsterdam, but it is indeed a pass for me,” according to The Telegraph.
The decision stems from Overmars’ commitment to his role at Antwerp, where he is under contract for another year and a half. “That’s because I really enjoy my work at Antwerp,” he explained. “I want to serve out that contract. Our aim was to make the club financially healthy. The stadium is ready and now we have to start building sports again.”
Overmars acknowledged being contacted by multiple individuals in “important positions” at Ajax, but declined to name them, citing a desire to avoid internal political maneuvering. He firmly stated, “For me it is done.” This marks the second time Overmars has rebuffed advances from Ajax sence leaving the club in 2012.
