Bruins’ Defense Faces Overhaul: Depth Chart Analysis

The Boston Bruins’ defensive situation requires significant attention this offseason, particularly on the right side. Injuries and trades exposed vulnerabilities, prompting general manager Don Sweeney to seek improvements. A recent trade with the Blackhawks offers a partial solution, but more work remains before training camp.

McAvoy’s Crucial Role

The Bruins are counting on Charlie McAvoy to lead their defense. After a season hindered by injury, including one sustained during the 4 Nations Face-Off, McAvoy is anticipated to be fit for training camp. His performance, which included seven goals and 23 points in 50 games, is vital. The team might consider pairing him with either Nikita Zadorov or Hampus Lindholm.

Peeke’s Potential and Uncertainty

Andrew Peeke, acquired at the 2024 trade deadline, is entering his second full season with the Bruins. In the previous season, he recorded a career-best 16 assists and 17 points in 76 games. As this is his contract year, Peeke aims to secure a good deal, potentially becoming the replacement for Brandon Carlo.

Soderstrom’s Status

The Bruins acquired Victor Soderstrom in a trade with the Blackhawks. Whether he will return to the NHL remains uncertain. Having played for Brynas IF in Sweden last season, he is now weighing his options. Soderstrom signed a two-year contract in Sweden, complicating his potential return to the NHL this offseason.

Other Depth Options

Ian Mitchell, a depth option, remains a part of the Bruins’ roster. He played 15 games for Boston in the previous season. Billy Sweezey, another player in a similar position, is under contract and played 64 games for Providence last season.

Wanner and Gallagher

Max Wanner, acquired in a trade, is still being evaluated by the Bruins. Ty Gallagher, who signed a minor-league contract, could potentially earn an NHL contract. Prior to turning pro, he excelled at Colorado College, scoring 26 points.

The Bruins will need to address their defensive depth. This season, the team’s performance suffered, allowing 2.78 goals per game, ranking them 13th in the league. (Source: StatMuse)
