BUDAPEST, Hungary – A dramatic late hat-trick from Evan Parrott propelled the Republic of Ireland to a stunning victory over Hungary, securing their place in the World Cup play-offs next March.
The Irish, who had previously secured home wins against Armenia and Portugal after a challenging start to their qualifying campaign – including a loss to Armenia – faced an uphill battle in Budapest after falling behind early. Lukács’ header, which survived a VAR review, initially put Hungary ahead.
Parrott leveled the score with a confidently taken penalty, awarded after Chiedozie Ogbene was fouled by Attila Szalai. However, Hungary regained the led through a strike from Varga.
Despite showing signs of fatigue following their recent victory over Portugal, the Republic of Ireland continued to press forward. Adam Idah had a goal disallowed for offside, but Parrott then delivered a remarkable finish, lifting a shot over Dibusz to equalize.
In the dying seconds of the match, Parrott completed his hat-trick, poking home a knock-on from Liam Scales, sparking jubilant celebrations from the Irish team and their travelling supporters. Parrott’s achievement marks the first time a Republic of Ireland player has scored a hat-trick in a competitive game since Robbie Keane in 2014.
The performance caps an exceptional week for Parrott, who stepped up in the absence of the injured Evan Ferguson, having already scored twice against Portugal.
Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher also played a crucial role in the victory, making excellent saves to deny Roland Sallai on two occasions and keeping the team in contention throughout the match. Kelleher has been a consistent performer for the Republic of Ireland throughout the qualifying campaign.
