Eagles Players Reportedly Frustrated with Jalen Hurts‘ Offensive Approach
PHILADELPHIA - Multiple offensive players on the Philadelphia Eagles have expressed frustration with quarterback Jalen Hurts’ decision-making and its impact on the team’s offensive scheme, according to recent reports. The discontent comes despite the Eagles’ strong 7-2 record.
ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio reported on November 26, 2023, that “the offense is going to look how Jalen Hurts wants it to look.” this dynamic appears to be a source of tension, especially as it relates to the team’s passing game.
Head coach Nick Sirianni, known for his emphasis on limiting turnovers, has seemingly granted Hurts more freedom, with Paolantonio noting Sirianni has “let [Hurts] out of [his] straitjacket” to a degree.
Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer expanded on the situation in his “unCovering the Birds” podcast, suggesting the core of the issue lies in Hurts’ quarterbacking style. McLane stated that frustrations stem from “the coaching staff’s inability to scheme up answers and adjusts, Hurts’ style of play, and Brown’s own self-inflictions.”
McLane specifically identified Hurts’ play as a key grievance, noting it isn’t “what you’d call ‘receiver friendly'” and contributes to a run-based offense that can limit passing opportunities. He questioned whether receiver A.J. Brown feels this approach is hindering his potential.
While acknowledging Hurts’ success – two Super Bowl appearances, one win, and a Super Bowl MVP award – McLane emphasized the challenges Hurts faces as a quarterback in a demanding market.
The situation remains fluid, but McLane suggested that continued success coudl allow teammates to tolerate the frustrations. However, a downturn in performance could necessitate changes to the offensive approach.
