Rep. Cory Mills Faces Ethics Probe and GOP Primary Challenges Over Misconduct Allegations

Rep. Cory Mills Under Fire as GOP Primary Challenges Intensify

Florida’s 7th Congressional District has become a battleground for Republican primary candidates, with Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) defending his tenure amid allegations of domestic abuse and military service embellishments. At a heated Aug. 5 debate, Mills faced direct challenges from rivals who cited a House Ethics Committee investigation and claims of a Justice Department probe, though the congressman denied both. “This isn’t personal for me. I’m in it so we don’t lose this seat,” said Ryan Elijah, a former news anchor and primary opponent, who argued the allegations could cost the district to Democrats in November.

Elijah, who has secured endorsements from Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos, claimed a DOJ investigation is “100%” underway, citing an anonymous source. Mills countered by referencing statements from House Speaker Mike Johnson and FBI Director Kash Patel, who reportedly denied knowledge of an active probe. “How is it that this one anonymous source knows more than the most powerful men on earth?” Mills asked, framing the claims as “fake news.”

Allegations of Stolen Valor and Religious Misrepresentation

Mills’ military record also drew sharp criticism. Army veteran Michael Don Johnson, another primary candidate, accused Mills of “stolen valor,” alleging he exaggerated heroic actions in Iraq to earn a Bronze Star. “This is personal with me. Stolen valor is a very, very important thing for me… that’s evil and nasty and wicked,” Johnson said, citing a document he claimed showed Mills’ marriage at a mosque and “Islamic training.”

Mills denied the allegations, citing his Official Military Personnel File and discharge paperwork, which he said confirm his Bronze Star award. “Go look at my [active duty discharge paperwork] from 2004, which shows my Bronze Star there and then shows it again in 2024,” he said. When pressed about a claim he married his ex-wife in a mosque, Mills responded: “We were actually married at the Fairfax (Va.) courthouse. I’m a proud Christian, I always have been.”

Local Impact and Civic Response

The controversy has raised questions about the 7th District’s political dynamics. Local legal experts note that Mills’ House Ethics Committee investigation, which the congressman says is “serious and complex,” could influence voter trust.

Voters navigating the implications of Mills’ challenges may seek guidance from local institutions.

Broader Implications for Florida’s Political Landscape

The race highlights broader tensions within the GOP, where candidates are increasingly scrutinizing each other’s records.

What’s Next for the 7th District?

The Aug. 18 primary will test Mills’ viability, with Trump’s endorsement and his record of “no guilty verdicts” as key arguments. However, Elijah and other rivals argue that the allegations—whether proven or not—create a “huge surprise” risk for the party. “If you look the other way, we are going to get a huge surprise in November,” Elijah warned.

As the race intensifies, the 7th District’s voters face a pivotal decision: whether to back a sitting congressman under fire or embrace a challenger promising change. The outcome could reshape the district’s political trajectory and signal broader shifts in Florida’s electorate.
