Boijmans Van beuningen Museum reveals Final Renovation Design, Sets 2026 Reopening
Rotterdam, Netherlands – After years of closure, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen unveiled its finalized renovation design today, confirming a planned reopening in 2026. The aspiring project, encompassing both structural repairs and a reimagining of the museumS internal layout, aims to transform the institution into a more accessible and enduring cultural hub.
The long-awaited refurbishment addresses critical issues with the building’s infrastructure, including water damage and outdated climate control systems. Beyond essential repairs, the redesign prioritizes visitor experience with a focus on transparency and flexibility, allowing for dynamic exhibition spaces and improved public access.The project’s completion marks a notable moment for Rotterdam’s cultural landscape and signals a renewed commitment to preserving and showcasing its rich artistic heritage.
The museum, shuttered in 2019, will feature a new, publicly accessible depot showcasing the museum’s entire collection - a first for a Dutch museum. This innovative approach,alongside modernized exhibition halls and enhanced visitor facilities,is projected to draw increased attendance and solidify Boijmans Van Beuningen’s position as a leading art destination. The total cost of the renovation is estimated at €82 million, funded through a combination of municipal, provincial, and national contributions, and also private donations. Construction is currently underway and remains on schedule for a 2026 grand reopening.
