Remembering Germán Astudillo: A Lifetime of Local Journalism
Germán Astudillo Olivares, a prominent Chilean sports commentator and personality in La Calera, died on March 18, 2021, at the age of 58, following a cardiac arrest at his home in Villa Empart, according to reports confirmed by multiple sources.
Astudillo was widely known as the voice of Unión La Calera, having served as the club’s representative on the popular Chilean sports program “Show de Goles” for over a decade, initially broadcast on Canal del Fútbol and later on TNT Sports. His passing prompted an outpouring of grief from the community and the football club itself.
Unión La Calera formally lamented Astudillo’s death, issuing a statement acknowledging his deep connection to the institution and extending condolences to his family. The club recognized his consistent portrayal of the team’s spirit across various media platforms. “Germán always stayed linked to our institution, proudly wearing the cement-colored jersey in different media,” the club stated.
Beyond his role in sports broadcasting, Astudillo was a multifaceted figure in La Calera. He was a national billiards champion, a businessman, a former candidate for city council, and held administrative positions at a hotel and the Municipal Stadium. He also worked as a humorist and animator in local nightclubs, and as a football commentator on Radio La Calera’s “Tribuna Deportiva” program, and Radio Nexo.
Friends and colleagues remember Astudillo for his passionate support of Unión La Calera, often repeating the phrase “Calerita lindo, Calerita de mi corazón” during his broadcasts. He was described as a caring and generous individual with a unique flair for entertainment.
Born to Pedro Astudillo, a former Banco del Estado employee, and Hilda Olivares, Germán Astudillo was the youngest of three children. His siblings include Cecilia, a teacher in the community, and Pedro, a prominent bronchopulmonary physician. He completed his secondary education at the Instituto Rafael Ariztía in Quillota.
As of March 23, 2026, Unión La Calera has not announced any specific memorial events beyond the initial statement of condolence.
