Religious Groups' Midterm Vote Preferences and Trump Approval Ratings

Religious Groups’ Midterm Vote Preferences and Trump Approval Ratings

October 14, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

White evangelical Protestant and White Catholic registered voters prefer Republican candidates over Democratic candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Voter Preferences Across Religious Groups

Overall, registered voters participating in the survey show a higher likelihood of supporting Democratic candidates than Republican ones for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. Among registered voters who favor Democrats, engagement and motivation to cast a ballot are higher compared to backers of Republican candidates.

US Midterms 2026 LIVE: Will Evangelical Voters Turn Out For Republicans? Critical Test For Trump

Roughly three-quarters of White evangelical Protestant registered voters, standing at 73%, state they intend to vote for the Republican candidate in their congressional district. Only 12% of this group plan to support the democratic candidate. White Catholic voters similarly favor Republicans by 50% to 32%.

Other demographics present a different preference. White non-evangelical Protestant voters remain split, with 45% supporting Republicans and 37% backing Democrats, a margin that is not statistically significant. Clearer preferences for Democrats appear among Black Protestants, Hispanic Catholics, atheists, agnostics, and individuals describing their religion as nothing in particular.

Shifting Approval Ratings for President Donald Trump

President Donald Trump’s approval ratings have declined across every examined religious group since the beginning of his second term. White evangelical Protestants remain the sole religious group where a majority approves of his job performance, sitting at 58% approval versus 40% disapproval.

In all other religious groups tracked by the survey, disapproval outweighs approval. Atheists, agnostics, and Black Protestants register the highest levels of disapproval for Trump’s handling of the presidency. The polling data captures responses from 5,062 U.S. adults, including 3,917 registered voters drawn from the American Trends Panel.
