Refurbished Ueno Station Transforms into Tokyo Art and Cultural Hub
East Japan Railway held a kickoff ceremony for a project to remake Ueno Station in Tokyo as a cultural innovation hub, partnering with local governments and cultural institutions to offer digital art experiences, QR-coded artwork guides, and expanded concourses following major station renovations.
Transforming Tokyo’s Northern Gateway Through Digital Integration
East Japan Railway, known as JR East, launched the revitalization effort following the completion of comprehensive renovation work at Ueno Station. The historic terminal has long served as a vital gateway connecting Tokyo with northern and central Japan.
The updated station features an expanded concourse situated outside the central ticket gates. This area now houses a large digital screen designed to broadcast historical retrospectives and visual media.
Connecting Commuters to Taito Ward Cultural Assets
The initiative integrates public transit architecture directly with the surrounding Taito Ward district. Travelers can now scan newly introduced QR codes deployed across the concourse to access detailed information regarding eight distinct art installations. Among these featured pieces are two notable statues of women crafted by the Japanese sculptor Fumio Asakura.

JR East structured the project to foster deeper cooperation with prominent regional entities. Management plans to coordinate closely with leading museums and art galleries located within Ueno Park, alongside academic institutions such as the Tokyo University of the Arts, which maintains a campus nearby.
“We want to build, together with the local community, a district that people will want to visit again and again,” said Yoichi Kise, president and CEO of JR East, at the launch ceremony.
