Tokyo Manga Studio Transforms into Dynamic Space with Reflective Aluminum
TOKYO – GAMMA Architects has completed Phase 2 of the Shueisha TOON FACTORY office in Tokyo, creating a workspace that visually embodies the creative energy of manga and WEBTOON production. The design tackles challenges of limited daylight and low ceiling height through innovative use of reflective aluminum, transforming the space into a dynamic environment evoking the motion and energy of illustration.
The ceiling treatment is central to the design, utilizing reflective aluminum to turn light into a drawing medium. Irregular reflections and overlapping lines create the impression of physical traces of the design process, translating the hand-drawn aesthetic into a three-dimensional architectural experience. This material experimentation extends to custom furniture, including a sofa reinterpreted from Le Corbusier’s LC2 model, uniquely upholstered with discarded weekly magazines.
GAMMA Architects’ approach focuses on converting technical constraints into opportunities for both material and conceptual expression. The studio’s work aims to visualize the essence of Shueisha TOON FACTORY’s creative practice, merging drawing, reflection, and storytelling into a cohesive spatial experience designed to support drawing, storyboarding, and editing workflows. The project demonstrates a commitment to sustainable design through the repurposing of materials like magazines. (https://gamma-architects.com)
